¡ENCANTADA! is an annual juried exhibition and sale of original paintings sponsored by the Rio Grande Art Association (RGAA). The 2023 exhibition will be held at Expo New Mexico from Friday, November 3 through Wednesday, November 29. The show will feature both standard and small work paintings. The awards for standard works are $1000 first place; $700 second place; and $500 third place. Small works awards are $600 first place; $400 second place; and $300 third place. Several cash merit awards will also be given in both categories.
Celebrating our 25th anniversary, RGAA is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the education and promotion of member artists. This call is open to paid RGAA members 18 and over. Our focus is on creativity and originality. All styles are welcome from traditional, representational, and abstract to non-traditional, contemporary, and avant-garde. Accepted painting media that do not require glass or plexiglass protection include oil, acrylic, classic egg tempura, insoluble ink, encaustic, and mixed media. It is recommended that all media be varnished or sealed.
RGAA membership is required for entry into ¡Encantada! 2023. Dues must be paid in full before submitting to the call for entry and remain current throughout the show or through November 29. To join or renew membership, visit rgaanm.org, click “Member Signup,” and follow directions. Payment may be made online or by mail. Mail checks to RGAA, PO Box 40148, Albuquerque, NM 87196. Mailed membership payments must arrive by 8 am, Thursday, August 17, 2023 to qualify for entry.
EXHIBITION REQUIREMENTS
All submitted paintings must have been produced within the last two years from the entry deadline. Submitted artworks done prior to August 19, 2021 will be withdrawn from jury consideration and shall not be replaced with another entry.
Paintings may have relief elements not to extend or recede more than 1 inch beyond the artwork surface. For mixed media paintings, 80% of the surface must be hand painted. Works produced on any substrate with pre-embossed or pre-printed images are ineligible.
Exhibited works must have a professional presentation, be suitably framed, and ready to hang with D-rings and picture hanging wire. Gallery-wrapped canvases must be painted on all four sides to be accepted. No saw-tooth hangers will be accepted. No name plaques may be attached.
For standard work paintings, the picture hanging wire must peak at 3.5” from the top edge of the work. Gallery-wrapped canvases must have a minimum depth of 1.5”.
For small work paintings, the picture hanging wire may peak at any height that provides suitable stability. Smalls works must have D-rings to be accepted. Gallery-wrapped canvases have no minimum depth.
Submitted artworks shall not violate copyright law. All artworks entered must be original in concept and executed solely by the entering artist. Works produced from copyrighted materials (i.e., published materials, photographs, or other artworks) are ineligible.
The artist retains the copyright for his/her image(s). However, by submitting to this show, the artist agrees to RGAA’s use of the images for publicity, promotion, and archival purposes. Artwork done under the guidance of an instructor is not eligible for entry.
Artworks shown in any previous RGAA-sponsored juried exhibitions, including the Oil and Acrylic Division of MasterWorks of New Mexico, are not eligible for entry.
Accepted artists are expected to volunteer for show hosting during the exhibition for one 3-5 hour period. If unable to host, another responsible person may substitute in your place. Complete information on hosting will be posted on the RGAA website.
All accepted artworks must be for sale and hang for the entire duration of the show (through 5 pm, November 29, 2023).
Any artist withdrawing one or more pieces after acceptance into the exhibition will be disqualified from exhibiting all his/her paintings in the current and following two ¡ENCANTADA! exhibitions.
Standard Work Painting Requirements and Fees
The minimum sales price for standard work paintings is $200.
The maximum unframed painting size is 50” wide and 72” high. The minimum unframed painting size is 108 square inches (width x height), which is equivalent to a 9”x12” canvas or panel. Maximum frame width is 4”. For example, a framed 9”x12” panel may not exceed 17”x20”.
Each artist may submit up to 3 images for selection into the show through ArtCall.org. Entry fees are $15 per image. Up to 3 works may be selected for exhibit from each artist.
Small Work Painting Requirements and Fees
Minimum sales price for small work paintings is $100.
The maximum unframed painting size is 80 square inches (width x height), which is equivalent to an 8”x10” canvas or panel. There is no minimum size. Maximum frame width is 3” For example, a framed 8”x10” panel may not exceed 14”x16”.
Each artist may submit up to 3 images for selection into the show through ArtCall.org. Entry fees are $15 per image. Up to 2 works may be selected for exhibition from each artist.

TERMS OF ARTWORK SALE
RGAA will retain 30%of the sale pricefor standard workssoldand 25% of the sale price for small workssold.
RGAAwill send payment to the artist at70% forstandard workssoldand 75%for smallworks within30 days of the close of the exhibition.
RGAAwill handle all sales and collect all associated payments frombuyers, including New MexicoGross ReceiptsTax.Buyerswill pay all packing and shipping charges, insurance costs, and handling expenses incurred or the sale, shipping, and delivery oftheirpurchasedartwork.
Artwork sold during the exhibition may be taken by the buyer upon sale, but the buyer will be encouraged to leave the artwork though theclosingweekend of the show.
Any artist who sells an exhibited artwork without going throughRGAAwill be disqualified from exhibiting all his/her paintingsin the current ¡ENCANTADA! exhibition and the following two ¡ENCANTADA! Exhibitions.
AGREEMENT OF ENTRY AND LIABILITY
RGAA has the right to refuse or disqualify any artwork that fails to meet eligibility, entry, and exhibition requirements or deemed inappropriate for public viewing.
Neither Rio Grande Art Association nor Expo New Mexico, their agents, employees, volunteers, or anyone working on the exhibition will be held responsible for any loss or damage of any artwork in the exhibition. Exhibiting artists are responsible for insuring their work during transit and exhibition.
An artist’s entry submission and payment constitute acceptance of all conditions and terms in this prospectus.
